I’ve been participating in fantasy football for the last seven years with my son, who’s now twenty-one. Since then I’ve discovered that the camaraderie of being able to do something together that we both enjoy has far surpassed simply having my son watch games with me on our direct tv hd in Pennsylvania. In fact there’s no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than with a game, a laptop, and a little friendly competition.

In previous years we’ve filled our league with a combination of friends and strangers, but we decided at the end of last season that it would be much better if we could find enough friends to complete it. So we sent out emails and pleaded with people to leave their old leagues and join us. We finally made it to the league limit and then added two more.

Another thing we did differently this year was hold a live draft. It was killer! Most of us live locally so we ordered a sheet pizza, fired up every laptop we could get our hands on, and had a great time. My son remarked afterwards that we should never go back to an automated draft. I couldn’t agree more.

Well, football season is just a mere month away and it promises to be another exciting one. And as for me, I’ll be attempting to repeat as league champ. Go Macon Bacon!
